Dr. Anthony Koch, Psy.D.

I’m here to listen.

"People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don't find myself saying, "Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner." I don't try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds." ~ Carl Rogers

How I work:

The core of my approach to psychotherapy is curiosity, attunement, and empathy.

"The empathic understanding of the experience of other human beings is as basic an endowment of a human as their vision, hearing, touch, taste and smell." - Heinz Kohut

Therapy with me is…

  • "We don't get wounded alone and we don't heal alone." - Carl Jung

I hope to form a professional connection with you that is real, interactive, and aligned with your goals.

  • "Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes." - Carl Jung

I will help you process and delve into thoughts and feelings to uncover deeper insights and foster personal growth.

  • "A normal human being ... does not exist." - Karen Horney

I will tailor my approach to meet your unique personal history, cultural identities, roles, and stage in life.

  • A psychoanalytic candidate is someone who is formally training to become a psychoanalyst. It’s a role midway between being a graduate-level clinician and a psychoanalyst.

    • Educational foundation: Candidates are usually already licensed mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, counselors) with advanced clinical training.

    • Specialized training: They enroll in a psychoanalytic institute, where they undergo years of coursework in psychoanalytic theory, history, and technique.

    • Personal analysis: A defining feature is that candidates themselves undergo their own intensive personal psychoanalysis - often three or more times per week.

    • Supervised practice: Candidates treat their own patients in psychoanalysis under the close supervision of senior analysts.

    • Identity: The title “candidate” signals that they are in the process of being “formed” as an analyst, both personally and professionally.
